The Mule Deer is indigenous to western North America. There are believed to be several subspecies including the black-tailed deer.^.Unlike its cousin, the white-tailed deer, mule deer are generally more associated with the land west of the Missouri River, or more specifically, with the Rocky Mountain region of North America. The most noticeable differences between whitetails and mule deer are the size of their ears, the color of their tails, and the configuration of their antlers. In many cases, body size is also a key difference with the Mule deer being bigger in size. The mule deer's tail is black-tipped, whereas the whitetail's is not.

White-tailed Deer refers to the white underside of the tail, which is held conspicuously erect like a flag when the animal is alarmed or running. All major points of the antlers come off the main beam. The adult White-tailed Deer has a bright, reddish brown summer coat and a duller grayish brown winter coat. White fur is located in a band behind the nose, in circles around the eyes, inside the ears, over the chin and throat, on the upper insides of the legs and beneath the tail. White-tailed bucks average about 200 pounds.
